Too many years have passed since I last spent a weekend in Washington DC; I looked forward it. I arrived late in the evening and checked in to my hotel, the Palomar Hotel. The receptionist handed me a few complimentary drink tickets along with my room key since I missed the Kimpton wine happy hour, but before I headed off to the bar for the drink, I asked a question.
“Where can I catch a good sunset?”
City sunsets are not the typical or the imagined idyllic sunset moment, but they can often be very special. You can find your ideal hotel near Metro to add an extra layer of charm to the experience. A hotel rooftop sunset can be beautiful from the right vantage point or just as memorable with good cocktails and good friends. My Washington DC’s sunset was about both.
The gentleman at the front desk of the Palomar told me the P.O.V Roof Terrace was “the” spot. He mentioned it overlooked the White House (one view), the Washington Monument (the other view) and you could even catch planes landing into Reagan – DC National. The rooftop bar offered some of the best views of the city, but I surprisingly learned it was at the W Hotel (not a Kimpton property). The gentleman suggested a different hotel as the place to go to see the sunset in Washington DC – he met my needs – Thank you sir. Thank you Kimpton.
The entire Washington DC weekend was a blast and I am especially thankful for my two friends Erin and Lola who joined me for the sunset moment. We shared rooftop cocktails at the POV Rooftop Terrace and countless laughs as the sun dipped on our nation’s capital city. Happy Sunset Sunday
