On my second night exploring New York’s Finger Lakes, I settled in to take in my first sunset form the shores along Kueka Lake.
After an afternoon of wine tasting, including a visit to the award winning Dr Konstantin Frank’s Vineyard and then checking in to the comfortable and cute Vinehurst Inn in Hammondsport, New York, I drove back along the Keuka Lake for dinner at the Lakeside Restaurant and Tavern. The summertime weekday crowd made it necessary to wait a few minutes for a table and also get creative when finding a place to park. (The lot was full and I needed to park a few hundred yards along a tight roadside – like many other patrons).
Yet, once I settled in for a glass of local Finger Lakes wine coupled with the red curry mussels starter (a must order for the broth alone) the crowds seemed to fade as my focus shifted from the restaurant scene to the tranquil lake waters and the soft, subtle color changes in the sky. The sun was no longer visible in the sky nestled in this valley, but it still worked its magic as the light slowly disappeared and the colors illuminated the sky before night began.
I watched as many arrived and left by boat, using the same soft remaining sunlight to aid their navigation. For me, I realized how different the lake seemed from my early morning kayak and as I took another sip of the local popular Riesling came to realize how I’ve come to really enjoy the “cooler” lake life. Yes, I can really get used to this type of adventure. Happy Sunset Sunday
Stay adventurous, Craig
I was a guest on my adventures in the Finger Lakes of New York, but as always the stories are my own.
