Sunset at the World War II Memorial: A Moment of Reflection

Sunset at the World War II Memorial

Washington D.C. always feels different with a new administration, but even amidst the political shifts, the city’s powerful memorials remain both moving and also timeless. On a recent visit, I was drawn to the World War II Memorial as the sun began to dip below the horizon. It became another memorable sunset in Washington DC.

Highlights of the World War II Memorial

Dedicated in 2004, this sprawling stone plaza, designed by Friedrich St. Florian, offers a profound and moving tribute to the sacrifices of a generation. The 56 columns, representing each state and territory, form a powerful ring, while bronze eagles bearing laurel wreaths symbolize victory and honor.

But perhaps the most powerful remembrance is the Freedom Wall. Inscribed with 4,048 gold stars, each representing 100 American lives lost, this wall serves as a stark reminder of the immense human sacrifice of war. Standing there, surrounded by this sea of stars, one can’t help but feel a deep sense of humility and gratitude.
