Yoga Retreat in Bali – Everything You Need to Know

If you ask me why OnBali is my go-to site for any recommendations about Bali, the answer is that they have a very comprehensive list on everything! Beyond the hotels and restaurants, you can easily find all the information about the best yoga in Bali as well.

Yoga in Bali has become a lifestyle because wherever you turn, chances are you’ll see yoga studios all over the island. Though Ubud is still the center of everything wellness, you don’t need to make the journey there if you stay in Uluwatu or Canggu.

yoga at a retreat

Here are some of  OnBali’s favorite yoga studios, where you can sign up for the class or join the yoga retreat. So, get your yoga mat ready because I’m about to show you the best place to get the yoga retreat packages in Bali to balance your mind, body, and soul.

  1. Udara, Canggu

Udara in Canggu is not your usual yoga studio. It’s a complex for yoga retreats, detox, and spas. In short, it’s dedicated to everyone looking to have a break from the modern world. It’s hard not to be in awe of the facilities at Udara because the five yoga shalas have an ocean view, and rice fields and old-centuries Balinese temple surround the complex.

According to Mariia Ipatova from OnBali, “You can customize your yoga retreat packages depending on how long you stay in Bali, so they don’t have the fixed package. And this is pretty accommodating for tourists, who often stay in Bali for only a couple of days.” While yoga is included in the package, you can also explore the Quantum Sound Domes for sound healing, Finnish sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, ice bath, cold plunge, spa, and access to the gym. You can do so many things at Udara beyond yoga, and truthfully, I could stay there forever!

  1. Yoga Barn, Ubud

I have to mention Yoga Barn on the list because, without it, the landscape of wellness in Bali might have been different. Founded in 2007 with only two studios and four yoga classes, Yoga Barn has expanded to more than 25 classes per day. Yoga Barn has everything you can think of about wellness practices, from Vinyasa and Yin Yoga to Sound Healing and Ecstatic Dance.

There are two durations of yoga retreats you can take at Yoga Barn: 1-Day and 3-Day Package. You will get access to the yoga class (three classes for 1-Day and five classes for 3-Day), a massage, and complimentary juice and lunch at Garden Kafe. If you need a different type of weekend getaway, I highly recommend a yoga retreat at Yoga Barn as a chance to detox your body and mind from your busy schedule.  Plus Ubud is a great place to attend a traditonal Legong Dance performance.

  1. Alchemy Yoga, Uluwatu

Alchemy Yoga Center in Bali

The Alchemy Yoga in Uluwatu brings the same concept as the Alchemy Ubud but tailors it to match the laid-back vibe of the coastal town. While in other yoga studios, you get Vinyasa or Hatha Yoga for the class, Alchemy named the class based on the elements of the universe, and the practices combine yoga, meditation, postures, movements, and breathwork.

The Earth, Air, Water, Fire, Ether, Krama, Yin, Flow, and Meditation. They also divide the classes based on difficulty levels to make sure you can match it with your level. For example, Water is designed for the advanced level because it incorporates complex sequencing, while if you’re a beginner like me, Earth is more fitting because it’s the foundational class to build strength, stability, breath work, and all-around meditation.

  1. Koa Shala, Sanur

I was surprised to find Sanur has a great yoga studio like Koa Shala. People usually don’t associate Sanur with yoga, but Koa Shala shatters the illusion by having a great selection of classes. With three classes per day, two in the morning and one in the afternoon, and far from the noise of the street, Koa Shala may as well be one of my favorite yoga studios in Bali.

The place is not big, but the yoga shala is surrounded by a tropical garden because it’s a semi-open space. While doing your downward dog position or signing up for Morning Flow, Hatha Yoga, or Yin Yoga, you can feel the breeze and the sound of chirping birds around. Doing yoga at Koa Shala is relaxing, and I cannot wait to return for another class.

  1. Yoga Union, Ubud

Unlike any yoga studios on the list, Yoga Union is specified on the Yoga Teacher Training program. The yoga studio is not where you can drop off and sign up for a daily pass, but if you want to explore deeper into yoga teaching by offering different courses. Yoga Union has classes on Hatha, Vinyasa Flow, Yin, and Ashtanga, as well as meditation.

You can take the 50Hr course or go all the way to the 200Hr, which takes approximately three weeks with classes running for six days with one day off. You will get a certificate once you finish the course as Yoga Union has been registered in the Yoga Alliance. I also found out they have courses in Greece along with online classes!

Conclusions

While most people come to Bali for its incredible nature, unique culture and their famous Bali Black Sand beach sunsets, there’s been a shift of visitors who come to Bali for yoga purposes. And with Ubud leading the way, followed by other areas in Bali. The growing interest and participation in yoga for a holiday is not slowing down soon. Whether you only want to sign up for a single class or plan to take your yoga teaching certificate, look nowhere else than these five yoga studios.

Now that you have the list of all the places to do yoga while visiting Bali, don’t forget to pack the right yoga outfit and, most importantly, a yoga mat. And when you’re ready to unroll your mat and move your body, sign up to get a different experience of doing yoga in Bali.
