Catemaco, a town located in the gulf coast Mexican State of Veracurz, still remains widely known for “brujos y brujas.” Yes, still today, the town is know for its medicine men and witches. And Nanciyaga, an island in the middle of lake, seems to be a place where the conjugate, perform and heal. This mysticism, a surprise for me inside Mexico, is still very popular today. The activities and advice continue to influence many of locals and even has become a tourist draw.
After my journey to the island I returned with a smile, perhaps even a greater knowing. Yes, I attended (voluntarily) a ceremony in midst of the jungle. With sacred healing, dancing and chanting I believe I connected to a greater source and will always cherish the day.
I will also always recall the image of the children, the children of Nanciyaga. Apparently the next generation of “healers” is being groomed. And for me, knowing that the knowledge, practices, and wisdom is being passed to another generation made it even more special.
