A Nighttime Stroll along the Niagara Falls

The illumination of the Niagara Falls at night creates a unique view of the natural wonder. I don’t know of any other falls with such easy access to such a beautiful nighttime show, and it’s free. So, after the Niagara Falls sunset, walk down to river’s edge and view the waterfall after (daylight) hours. I recommend it.

And on my visit I left my room located in Niagara Falls, (on the Canadian side) with camera and tripod to attempt to capture some of the first nighttime photographs since my adventure to see the Northern Lights in Canada. I had much friendlier weather.

The American Falls at Night

the multi-color view of the American Falls

The American Falls are straight and distinct because there is a spot between the falls where no water actually falls (you can stand there in the day time on the American side of the border). The falls often showed multiple colors demarcating the division between the falls, but I did capture a complete “rainbow” of colors too. Enjoy.

The Horseshoe Falls at Night

very purply...

The more popular of the two major waterfalls at Niagara Falls, the Horseshoe Falls (also known as the Canadian Falls) are the waterfalls shaped like a horseshoe. At night, although they changed the colors, the display illuminated the falls in a single color (as when I arrived and photographed it).

Additionally, the heavy mist, although blocking the view at times, allows visitors to witness the rainbow in the water at Niagara Falls. The rainbow, easily visible in the daytime view of the falls, was also possible under the artificial white light, if only slightly.

Lights Out at Niagara Falls

As much as I enjoyed the views at night with the lights, I was glad I went when the lights were off (time depends on the season, but lights shine all year round – see “Niagara at Night” schedule here). I just walked alongside side and listened as the sound, and lack of people, provided a special moment. A peaceful and powerful moment before heading back to my hotel.

Yes, Niagara Falls during a daytime stroll, when enjoying the adventure that awaits at the falls, at night with the lights, and then alone at midnight, all provide different view of this natural and impressive world wonder.

Stay adventurous, Craig

Loved my time there, although the neighboring areas seemed a bit tacky, the falls were not

I heard all about how tacky it was or has become, but I really enjoyed my time right by the falls too. My only complaint, if I had one was the food, I believe there is room for improvement there… But still definitely a great weekend trip. Stay adventurous, Craig

It is great to see views at night but I would have wished to see this natural beauty without the artificial lights as you had an opportunity once. I hope to be able to travel to this place once soon.
