I arrived mid-afternoon to check in and asked, “What time does the sun set?” Puzzled, the staff of the Villa Blanca Hotel responded with a surprised look. Si (yes) they understood my English. It seemed as if everyone in Costa Rica did (although for the record, I spoke much Spanish). The surprised look was because the Villa Blanca Reserve was located in the middle of the Cloud Forest Biological Reserve of Los Angeles in the mountains of Costa Rica. People didn’t come here to watch a sunset; they came to relax in nature. People came to go birding, to hike among the clouds, and relax in the mountain air. But the sun sets everywhere including in the cloud forests of Costa Rica.

With heavy cloud cover, seeing the sun dip behind the distant mountains was unlikely at Villa Blanca, but seeing color in the clouds would be my sunset this evening. When I noticed a pinkish hue in the sky outside my casita (villa) I grabbed my camera and walked up to the main lodge to see the more of the sunset sky.
I took photos from various vantage points and included two in this post. It wasn’t a Tamarindo sunset, but I never expected it to be. It was a unique sunset in the cloud forest. It is all part of the joy of chasing the sunset. Each one is spectacular in its own special way. The more sunsets I watch the more I confirm this… Yes, each sunset has its charm. Happy Sunset Sunday

Unexpected Magic at Sunset
The image was selected for the 2016 Sunset Calendar, because although I did converse about the sunset with the hotel staff, they only confirmed a popular belief, I would not see a sunset. But I discovered and even share that even in the cloud forest, the sunset can be quite beautiful.
