One of the joys of New York is non-stop flights to nearly anywhere. You can get places usually without any connections or long layovers. But on a recent return flight from Mexico, I needed to fly back to the Scranton, PA area airport and that meant a connection via Detroit Metro (DTW).
I actually have good memories of my times in Detroit and Michigan in general. I spent six weeks working in the city early in my consulting career and also went on a press trip to Flint, Michigan early in my writing career. But a few hour layover when you want to already be there (or still in Mexico), well that never brings a smile to you in Detroit or really anywhere. But, this time it did.
I walked out of immigration and needed to reenter the departure gates to find my flight. When I walked through the doors all I noticed was a bright orange sky and all the fixtures of a classic airport scene. It seemed like a painting with people passing and using cell phones, a large artsy fountain, and wall of windows to enable passengers to watch planes take off and park in front of the setting sun.
I passed through the TSA screening and immediately reached for my camera. Wondering if you can even take photos in an airport, I hastily took out my canon to capture the image. I eventually wanted to share it here on Sunset Sunday, but I also wanted to remind myself of an important lesson.
Yes, sometimes you can find beauty when and where we don’t expect it (and also in Detroit). This sunset reminded me of just that very fact. Enjoy.

Unexpected Magic at Sunset

This unexpected moment comes when returning from a Mexico, a place well documented in my Sunset Sunday Series, and passing through immigration to have an opportunity to walk towards this beautiful moment in Detroit’s Metro airport.
