Namibia claims to be the second least populated country in the world. It ranks behind Mongolia (tops on my bucket list for travel). The place can feel empty. Very empty at times. And not just in the desert.
After the journey on the road from Sossusvlei to Swakopmund, we found out just how empty. The sea side city originally established as a German colony and still very German in feel, seemed empty. Winter season and during the week didn’t help as the many summer time vacationers from the capital were not in town.
But just south of the infamous skeleton coast and with the Atlantic to the west, it was a place you can watch a sunset. I walked to the beach. I headed down the clean sidewalk and eventually situated myself to catch the pier in the sunset photo. It reminded me of California until I put down my camera and began to walk the empty street back to the hotel it was Namibia.
Happy Sunset Sunday.
Unexpected Magic at Sunset
The image was selected for the 2016 Sunset Calendar. For me growing up as New Yorker, an east coaster in the States, it unexpected to walk along Atlantic Ocean and see a sunset I’d expect to see in California with a pier on the beach. But that is normal here in Namibia and that’s part of the magic.
