Sunset Sunday – the Lighthouse View at Lake Hefner in Oklahoma City

My plane landed in serious rain. The Oklahoma City forecast showed no relief until the next day, a day too late. To be honest, I never thought I’d see a sunset in Oklahoma City, but thankfully the rain clouds departed early and I had my opportunity.

My contact at the Oklahoma Tourism Board recommended Lake Hefner. I plugged in the lake front destination into my google maps and started the twenty minute drive northwest when the sky first started show some color other than blue.

On the drive, the horizon started to glow and the flat landscape allowed the illumination to stretch beyond the view of the entire windshield. It seemed Oklahoma was in for a treat, but would I miss it?

Anxiously I arrived, parked quickly, grabbed my camera and walked briskly to lake front. I took a few images and instantly noticed I wasn’t alone.  Joggers, families, romantic couples all seemed to have the same idea. Everyone was photographing the moment.

I then noticed the lighthouse and walked over to it. A New England replica built in 1999, it served as dedication to a maritime past, but today it seemed to serve as a perfect place to view a sunset on Lake Hefner. Happy Sunset Sunday.

Unexpected Magic at Sunset

Landing in rain with a bleak forecast, I certainly never expected to see the sunset in Oklahoma City, but it turned out to be a spectacular moment at a surprising location with a New England styled lighthouse. Yet even more memorable was how I was really impressed with Oklahoma City. As an east coast New Yorker, I never expected to really like the destination, but as it turned out I really enjoyed spending my time in Oklahoma City.
