Simply stated, the views of Copper Canyon (and all the canyons) amaze. Standing at the edge and looking out over the vast landscapes in complete wonder is another part of the magic of Mexico. And as a fan of the sunset, I knew I needed to capture the view. Thankfully, I did.
We exited Chihuahua Pacifico, or el Chepe, the Copper Canyon train at a stop close to Divisadero. Then after an afternoon of adventure, a zipline through the canyons, my group checked in for the night at Hotel Mansion Tarahumara.
I knew I’d wake up early to watch the sunrise from my balcony, so as I thought I’d take in the sunset next door. A few of us went over to see the neighboring hotel and visted the Posada Mirador. And with a 2 for 1 happy hour, it is safe to say we are all glad we did.
After ordering my cerveza and a Sotol, (a native spirit to Chihuahua) I grabbed my camera to capture some of the fading light on the mountains. Just like my images of Lake Atitlan at Sunset, I watched the sunlight create lines of light, in essence timelines, on the canyons until they disappeared and the sun dipped behind the edge of the canyon behind us. The sun’s descent wasn’t in view, so the true magic would be created with the “afterglow” in the sky. And it was.
The warmth disappeared with the sunlight, but the Sotol enabled me to stay outside and capture the moment. It is a moment I’ll cherish for the views and also the company shared as well. Sotol always tastes better when it’s shared. Ah! Chihuahua – Happy Sunset Sunday.
Stay adventurous, Craig
Travel Tip: Both the Hotel Mansion Tarahumara and the Posada Mirador have incredible views of the Copper Canyon and as magical as they are at sunset make sure you wake up early and catch the sunrise too. The hotels have a perfect east view and the sun rises right over the canyon.
Also, I’d like to thank Authentic Copper Canyon, TravelLand and the Mexican Tourism Board for making this journey and one of my dream trips inside Mexico a reality. Ah! Chihuahua!
